DOSA had a strong win in the traditional grudge match against St Virgil’s Old Scholars on Saturday 15 June. Ex-AFL player, Simon Wiggins, Dominic College Class of 1998, joined his friends for the first of a number of games for DOSA this season, and Tim Golding, Dominic College Class of 2001, played his 200th game.

These milestones inspired DOSA to a magical start, kicking six goals to one in the first quarter, before the rain, mud and chilling wind restored the game to a hard physical slog. Neither side kicked a goal in the second quarter, and though St Virgil’s fought back in the third, DOSA poured on the pressure in the last quarter to run away for a comfortable 40 point win.

As DOSA has been struggling to win games this year, the boys all feel they’ve turned the corner. ‘There is nothing better than knocking off the arch rival St Virgil’s,’ said Dominic College Old Scholar Class of 1999, Cameron Golding. ‘It was amazing being part of the game.’

‘The focus of playing for each other and relentless attack on the ball paid off’ said Mr Aaron Davey, Class of 1999, ‘and hopefully DOSA can start a bit of a winning streak.’

‘Running out for Tim’s 200th and obviously the impact of playing with an ex-AFL player certainly ensured that DOSA turned up to play,’ he said.

Simon Wiggin’s presence was a highlight for the crowd, but the rain and darkness made visibility difficult. The hot pies and chips were appreciated.

Next week, DOSA plays Channel away on Saturday night. Every match from here on is vital to DOSA catching up with the leaders.

Night Photography

Dominic College’s Media Studies guru, Ms Jo Boyd, explained ‘Over three years Dominic College has been holding After School Photography as a co-curricular activity and I thought it was about time we got the cameras out at night!’

‘Armed with cameras, tripods and a suitably dark night sky, we jumped into the Outdoor Ed bus and drove off into the wild blue yonder. Well, we actually went to Cornelian Bay to get the Tasman Bridge outlook, to the Domain facing down towards the Brooker and New Town. Then we rounded off our trip at Salamanca around the lawns and Princes Wharf.

Students were able to take some really great shots and learned how to master using their cameras at night. You’ll see some beautiful ‘light painting’ shots as well as some dark, almost spooky, works looking at the playgrounds and other areas we visited. When you empty a space of people and light it takes on a new meaning!

Check out the media board outside the library to see more great student work. You can see some of the students experimental night work on our College Facebook page.

Former Boys’ Town child migrants Frank Lewis and Peter Allsopp attended the opening of the national exhibition ‘On Their Own: Britain’s Child Migrants’ at the TMAG on Thursday 6 June, along with Dominic College history teacher Sarah Stockwin.

Exhibition curator, Liz Adkins, interviewed Frank for the introductory video on display in the foyer, and Frank spoke eloquently about how not knowing who he really was made his life more difficult.

Peter (Jackie) and Frank were two of the 39 boys who were brought out to Boys’ Town, Glenorchy, from Catholic orphanages in Britain, in 1952.

Most of the boys were told their parents were dead, but many discovered they were given up by unmarried mothers, or by families in difficult circumstances during the Second World War. Some former child migrants were eventually reunited with their mothers in the late 1990s, but for many it was too late.

The exhibition was created by Australian National Maritime Museum curator Kim Tao and has been on display in Melbourne for the last year. It will be open in Hobart’s TMAG till 25 August.

The displays are a powerful and evocative collection of objects and stories that inform us of the child migrant experience over a hundred years to the 1960s. Apart from the introductory film, however, there is no display or interpretation about Boys’ Town. For more information about child migrants at Boys’ Town you can read some stories in our magazine Veritas by following this link.

Dominic College Principal, Beth Gilligan, writes:

Congratulations to Jeff on his outstanding success in teacher leadership and innovation in the establishment and development of Dominic College’s Magone Program, together with Kate Longey and Rod Butterworth. Jeff’s work and the program would not have been possible without the huge commitment of so many other Dominic staff (teaching and non-teaching) who have worked incredibly hard to support students who have gone into and transitioned from the program. Dominic College staff commitment to these students has been Salesian in every sense.

I am very proud of Jeff and the professional excellence of all of Dominic College’s teachers and staff.

Dr Trish Hindmarsh, Director, Catholic Education Office adds her congratulations to Jeff, and to Dominic College for the ongoing, important work of a dedicated team:

Congratulations to Jeff on his award, and also to Kate Longey, who won the State-based Southern Cross Teacher Award (UTAS) earlier in the year for her professional work in the Magone Program. Fr Frank Bertagnolli was awarded an Order of Australia in 2011 for his educational contribution to marginalised youth in Australia. Don Bosco would be proud of them all!

These are outstanding achievements for Dominic College, for the Salesians and for Catholic Education in Tasmania.

Excerpt from the homily of Fr Bernie Graham SDB during the Mass:

When we think of having a 40th birthday party I’m sure most of you young people usually think of someone who is really old! But 40 is not old, especially for a school: quite a number of people here today were here 40 years ago when the school began – Fr Lawrie and Sr Pam were the deputy principals (and they are not old, even now!) Rosemary Mann, Jackie Allsopp, Mr Roberts, Clinton Baker.

But the reason why Dominic College was formed way back then, and why it continues on today is so that thousands of young people, those who were here in 1973, all of you here in 2013, and all of those who will be here in 2023 and in 2053 and for however long after that, can have the benefit and blessing of a great Dominic education.

And what is a great Dominic education?

It is to learn from the example of our two great Dominics:

Dominic Guzman – a man of courage, of lover of learning, a preacher of God’s word in what he did and what he said. Following on from the example of the apostles.

Dominic Savio – friend of all, example to his peers, a saint in the classroom and in the playground.

It is to come to know and love Jesus and Mary, just as the two Dominics did. It is to learn as many things as possible, to develop as many skills, to undertake as many experiences as you can so that your future has as many options and directions as possible.

It is to learn to be faith-filled and courageous like the disciples and live lives that reflect the gifts of the Holy Spirit: humility, tolerance, patience, love, gentleness and truth. It is to learn to build great friendships and relationships with others in community with one another.

Dominic College has endeavoured to provide this style of education for the past 40 years.

For this we say a great big thanks, particularly to all those who have worked hard to ensure it achieves these goals on your behalf, particularly all of the teachers and staff, but also the students and parents who all make a wonderful contribution.

And we also pray that the future will be just as blessed as the past and that many others will experience the unique school that is Dominic.

So, Happy Feast Day and Happy Birthday!

Our students made a Happy Birthday video for Dominic College.

It’s a great movie – and a lot of fun!

You can watch it on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/DominicCollege

Or you can watch it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIVmDu9bQyI

Ms Jo Boyd, Media Studies teacher and Guzman House Coordinator, said ‘Initially I thought I would put together a small clip of students and staff saying happy birthday to celebrate. I asked my media class to film around classrooms and also at recess.’

‘When I was looking for a Happy Birthday tune to run under the visuals, I remembered the old Altered images version. I spoke to the girls who sang and Mr John Gerard asked his Guitar group if they would do a live version, which happily they agreed to. I only asked them on Friday and we filmed on Tuesday!’

‘Then we spliced together on the finished film some of their footage along with the filmed students and staff. I really liked the final effect which showcased student talent on and off the screen, as well as the personalities that came out.’

Congratulations, students. Well done!
