Dancing class visits JDW

An annual event that is beginning to be a rite of passage for Dance students at Dominic is the much anticipated visit to Miss Jenina’s JDW Dance Workshop Studios situated near the school in Bosco Drive.

This week, both the Year 8 Dance class and the Senior Dance class visited the studios for a workshop and orientation at the fully equipped dance facility.

Guest instructor, Kate, delivered a demanding workout which included ‘acro’, (acrobatics) and introduced the basics of aerials for novices and allowed our more experiences dancers to dazzle with their dexterity and control in flight. As well as touring the studio complex, they looked at the extensive costume department and soaked up the atmosphere of what is one the most successful dance schools in Hobart.

We are pleased to continue our partnership for third year with Jenina’s Dance World (JDW) for elective dance. Dance is a growing subject in secondary schools across the country and this is certainly the case at Dominic College. Students use the elements of dance to explore choreography and performance to consolidate and develop technical and expressive skills.

Some student’s experience in Dance extending back many years, so it is a good opportunity to reap the benefits for skills they have developed. It is also an opportunity to welcome newcomers to dance. In this subject, different types of dance are explored and a broad repertoire of dance styles is assembled over their course of study.

The course has a strong emphasis upon learning by doing, and both classes are hard at work on creating pieces that will be performed at the Southern Tasmania Dance Eisteddfod.

The classes are in the development phase experimenting with choreography and honing the skills to be featured in their dance pieces. Miss Hewitt was very impressed with the way our students embraced the learning opportunity and also for the way they encouraged and supported their classmates.
