Dominic College Old Scholar Liam Jones (Class of 2007) is making a name for himself as an up and coming football star. Liam was offered a football scholarship to Scotch College in Melbourne at the end of last year and has also secured himself a place in the Australian Institute of Sport’s Football Squad.
Featured in the Mercury this week, the son of former North Hobart and St Kilda star Bob Jones, Liam is certainly making a name for himself both in his home state and his new home in Melbourne.
After touring South Africa in the first week of April, Liam returned to Australia to play in a curtain raiser to the ‘Western Derby’ between AFL teams Fremantle and West Coast at Subiaco Oval. Liam was a ‘strong contributor at full-back in the AIS team’s 30 point victory over West Perth, despite suffering a broken nose in a marking contest in the opening two minutes of the game’ (The Mercury, 9th April 2008).
Liam is also lined up to play in another match later this year for his current school Scotch College, when they play Melbourne Grammar in the curtain raiser to the 150th Anniversary game between Geelong and Melbourne in Round 19.
Liam will be eligible for the AFL draft in the near future and we wish him all the best for what looks like a very promising football career.

Former Dominic College student Aaron Cornelius has made headlines again this week and for all the right reasons. Aaron, along with two other young Tasmanian Football players has been branded as ‘Tasmania’s next batch of future AFL stars’ (The Mercury, 12/7/07). Aaron has been named as a member of the All-Australian Under 18 team after the national championships in Melbourne.
His superb skills certainly didn’t go unnoticed with AFL National Talent Manager, Kevin Sheehan commenting that ‘he has got a pair of the best hands for his age in Australia’.
Aaron will miss out on a chance of selection in this year’s AFL draft pick due to his age, however he looks to be on the right track for next year and future AFL stardom.

Aaron Cornelius, Dominic College Old Scholar (Class of 2006) and Glenorchy Football player, has been making headlines in recent weeks after he was selected to be part of the Australian AIS-AFL Academy Under 17 team.
The squad will travel to South Africa later this year to play against them in a game of Aussie Rules. The occasion will go down in history, as it is the first time Australia has taken on another country in an AFL game.
The team is comprised of players from right around Australia, including Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.
During the trip to South Africa, Aaron and his teammates will play in exhibition matches and conduct football clinics before competing in the historic match.
Aaron is building his Football skills, learning under Brisbane Lions former Captain Michael Voss and former Kangaroo star Jason McCartney, who are both assistant coaches for the AIS AFL Academy.
We wish Aaron and the entire Under 17 team all the best for their trip and I’m sure we will be hearing much more from Aaron as he further develops his impressive Football skills.

Old Scholar Jeremy Green was recently featured in The Mercury talking about his powerboat racing debut at Granton in December.
Jeremy, who completed Year 10 at Dominic in 2005 and is now studying at Guilford Young College, has always been around and involved in the world of powerboats. His father raced powerboats for a number of years around the state. Although he doesn’t have a car driver’s license yet, Jeremy made his debut in the 850cc class at the Wayne Cross Memorial Regatta. He loves the adrenalin rush from racing his powerboat named Cocktail, which is powered by a 70 horsepower outboard and is 14ft in length.

Students from the Class of 2005 who continued on to Guilford Young College have not only spent the last few weeks preparing for their Year 11 exams, but have also been preparing nominations for the 2007 Student Leaders.
After all votes were cast and tallied, former Dominic College students Nick Morgan, David Bond, Alicia Sargent, David Loring and Lisa Schmalfuss were all elected to be a part of the 14 GYC Students Leaders for next year. The two College Captains are to be elected at a later date by these 14 Student Leaders.
A terrific result for Dominic College Old Scholars!

Class of 1986 - 20 Year Reunion
On the night of Saturday 14 October, the Dominic College Year 10 class of 1986 held their 20-year reunion at La Porchetta function room. Over 75 people were in attendance including seven old scholars who travelled from interstate for the event. Several members of the teaching staff from that era were able to join in the celebrations including Sr. Margaret Mary who travelled from Ballarat, former principal Fr. John Papworth, Mrs. Jacqui Conboy, Mr. Rob Carroll, Mr. Tony Webb and Mr. Brian Brennan.
Guests shared stories and anecdotes from their time as students at Dominic including the breaking of various windows, trampolining, camp at Maria Is., winning the Head of the River, playing “Animal”, Fr. O’Mara’s antics and the memories of Brother Peter. Along with the memories of the past, those present were able to share their experiences, joys and challenges since leaving Dominic College.
As the evening wore on into the small hours of the morning the celebrations and reminiscing continued as friendships were renewed. The success of the night is largely due to both the efforts of the organising committee; Gemma Young (nee Marriott), Lucia Visentin (nee Di Santo), Simone Verrier (nee Harvey) and Leesa Baker; and of course the great spirit and sense of community of these former students which lives on even after 20 years.
Photos of the night are available on this website. Contact details of those present on the night have been made available from the College for anyone from this year group to access. Please contact Mrs. Caroline Jager or Fr. John Papworth for any further information on organising a reunion or to make contact with any old Collegians.
