National Science Week
Nurturing the Seeds of Science - Nurturing Curiosity and Creativity
This week we joined other communities in celebrating National Science Week, guided by the theme - 'Nurturing Seeds of Knowledge', we are reminded that every scientific discovery began with a simple question: Why? Asking 'Why?' is the essence of curiosity and creativity. As a school we believe that nurturing this curiosity and giving students the freedom to think creatively is the heart of meaningful science education.
It is widely acknowledged in science that the important thing and the driver of human progress is not to stop questioning. This spirit of questioning is something we seek to cultivate everyday in all our students irrespective of their endowments. Research supports this approach: inquiry-based learning encourages students to ask questions, investigate problems, interpret evidence and develop creative solutions. Studies have also found strong links between student curiosity and their engagement with learning.
Nurturing curiosity is not the sole responsibility of the school or science team alone. It is a partnership between school, home and the wider community. Parents and carers can encourage children to question everyday phenomena, explore nature, discuss scientific ideas and pursue their own investigations. We all owe the next generation authentic experiences that enrich their learning and independent discovery of nature works and how science shapes our world.
Our collective role is to create spaces where questions are welcomed, creativity is valued, mistakes are viewed as opportunities; challenges are stepping stones, and our precious students are encouraged to explore possibilities.
Beyond this Science Week, let us work together to plant, nurture and grow the seeds of curiosity and creativity, empowering our young people to become confident thinkers, imaginative problem-solvers and lifelong learners.
