Year 4 HaSS Learning
Yesterday, Year 4 had the privilege of welcoming Mr. Emilio Reale, the CEO of Glenorchy City Council, as part of their HASS inquiry learning.
Under the banner of Humanities and Social Sciences (Civics and Citizenship) in the Australian Curriculum, students explore how local governments work, the roles and responsibilities of leaders in the community, and how decisions are made to support citizens. Having Mr. Reale so generously offer us bid time visit allowed students to see this learning come to life.
- The history of Governance and councils in Tasmania
- What his role as CEO involves on a daily basis
- The pathway he took in working for the council and this leadership position
- The challenges and successes that come with leading a local council
- Current projects happening in our community, including the new park development at Tolosa and the reopening of the Glenorchy swimming pool

I was impressed by the range of thoughtful questions asked by the year four cohort - ranging from leadership, decision-making, community needs, to how local government supports the community.
This a wonderful opportunity for them to connect classroom learning to the real world and better understand how local decisions impact their everyday lives. We are incredibly grateful to Mr Reale for giving his time to support our learning and helping students see that leadership, service, and community involvement are tangible and achievable pathways.
What a fantastic example of inquiry learning in action!
