Dominic Teacher Exchange to Shizuoka Salesio School - Week 2

12 June 2026

One of the most interesting observations has been the strong sense of responsibility shown by students, regardless of year level. From students who completed their work early moving around the classroom to assist their classmates to the much touted ‘cleaning’ of classrooms by students in Japan, there is a huge attitude of care and respect inherent in everything that happens here.

It has also been fascinating to learn more about the expectations placed on students outside of school, with them from Year 1 completing nightly homework that includes mathematics, reading and Kanji practice. The teachers also work incredibly long hours, including every second Saturday – and yet they never seem tired!

It has been wonderful sharing information about Tasmania, Dominic College and Australian life, while also learning more about Japanese culture from the students. I have followed through on many suggestions of local food, television, music, and places to explore. Highlights have included castles, temples, museums and more soccer games. I am excited to join classes on excursions next week (I have three in three days!) and am sure there will be some interesting things to learn.

Every day continues to bring new experiences, and I am looking forward to discovering even more about Japanese education and Salesian life in the weeks ahead. What an absolute privilege this experience has been!
