Good on you, Eli

Eli’s Sleepout

Eli Morrison is in the newsletter today for the wonderful Salesian spirit he has shown through his Scouting activities. Eli has been involved in the Scouting movement since his days as a Cub Scout and is a member of the Mt Stuart Scouts.

At a meeting of his Troop Council some months ago, Eli suggested that they should raise funds for a cause other than the Scouts. His idea was to run a Sleep Out, along the lines of the Sleep Outs for CEOs, run by St Vincent de Paul (Vinnies), and for the funds to be donated to Vinnies.

Eli reports that he received helpful and inspirational advice from Mr David Reinbach and the Young Vinnies group of Dominic College. In addition, his own parents were totally supportive in the preparations for the event.

Finally, last weekend, all the preparations came together with 20 Scouts and several adults attending the Sleepover at the Lea at Kingston. In keeping with the theme, all the food to cater for the sleepout was bought for less than $100. A representative from Vinnies was organised to speak to the group and another Vinnies person brought Loui’s Van for show and tell. Afterwards there were noisy games with torches and plenty of fun.

In all, Eli raised over $100, and received donations of 25 blankets and a carton of tinned food. On Tuesday Eli handed it all to the office of St Vincent de Paul in Hobart.

Congratulations to Eli for this innovative action to raise money for and draw attention to a most worthwhile cause. The Salesian spirit is alive at Dominic College in the hearts of students like Eli, who help make the world a better place.

Eli’s comment? “I just love helping people.”
