Model United Nations Assembly 2018

Last weekend Isabella Cooke, Daniel Hunniford, Noella Irumva and Georgia Amos joined 32 other Year 10 students from across the state to compete in the annual Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA). Isabella and Daniel were representing Syria, and Noella and Georgia were representing France.

MUNA is organised and sponsored by Rotary clubs throughout Tasmania and pits teams of like-minded Year 10 students against each other as they debate issues of international significance.

The students arrived in Deloraine on Friday night to be met by the friendly faces of Rotary members that would billet them over the weekend.

The action started on Saturday morning as 18 teams met at the Deloraine Community Centre to begin verbal battle. A total of 16 resolutions ranging from the use of chemical weapons to ending poverty were raised, amended and debated over the following two days with much gusto, humour and vigour.

Alliances were slowly formed then quickly broken, interjections accepted and refused all with a sense of affability and fun.

This continued until lunchtime on Sunday interrupted by a formal dinner and disco on Saturday night.

Isabella, Daniel, Noella and Georgia are to be commended and congratulated on the effort they put into the presentation of their costumes and preparation of their arguments. They worked tirelessly this and last term to prepare themselves for such a difficult challenge.

All of us involved with MUNA would like to thank the Rotary Club of Glenorchy for sponsoring the teams, and the Rotary Club of Deloraine for an engaging, enjoyable and rewarding weekend.
