The quack is back

Following a highly successful launch in 2015, the Dominic Ukulele Cool Kids (DUCK) Club has recommenced in K-6 for another exciting year.

Last year the DUCK Club was offered to students from Years 3 and 4, where students were given the opportunity to try something new and learn how to play an instrument that is featured in much of the music they regularly listen to, all while having fun with music.

Due to the superb efforts and enthusiasm shown by our inaugural Club members, the decision for 2016 was made to not only open DUCK Club to students from Years 3 to 6, but to also function in two streams catering for ability.

After only a few weeks of meeting together, it is clear that the DUCK Club program is bigger and better than ever before!

Led by myself, the Red DUCKs are the new beginner members, and although they initially had little-to-no experience, after only three weeks they have all mastered the C chord and can confidently sing “Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree” while accompanying themselves on their ukulele at the same time!

They have also proven to be excellent team members, helping their peers and even our two beginner teaching staff members, Kumashiro Sensai and Mrs Leesa Maxwell whenever they need a little assistance.

The Blue DUCKs are led by Mrs Jane Kilpatrick, and they are our seasoned DUCKs from the 2015 Club.

They are now playing at an intermediate level, where they have begun to develop their previously-honed skills, while also exploring more complex chords and rhythmically-challenging strumming patterns to accompany their new repertoire.

Judging by their progress and great enthusiasm demonstrated in only a few weeks thus far, it is evident that 2016 will be a very exciting year for all of the DUCK Club members and an very entertaining year for their audience!
