Walk to School Day 17 May

This year Walk Safely to School Day was held on Friday 17 May. Now in its 20th year, National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event when all school children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote road safety, health and the environment.

Meeting at St Johns’ Church at 8am, members of our Dominic Community walked to school and enjoyed the morning sun and fresh air. This year we saw almost 200 students, teachers and parents join us, deciding to start their day with some exercise.

By the end of our 2.3km walk we were all ready to enjoy a fresh piece of fruit and a drink of water. Thank you to Senior Sergeant Simon Jones, Community Policing Officer for Southern Tasmania, who helped us safely cross some of the busier roads on our walk.

Last Friday, Dominic College participated in the Walk Safely to School event. The walk started at St John’s Church in Glencorhy and students walked up Tolosa Street to school. The walk started at 8.00am and we’d finished by around 8.30am.

There were a large number of participants from a variety of year levels from Kinder – Year 10. Lots of family members also joined us on the walk. The number participating is growing every year!

The main idea of Walk Safely to School is to get kids outside and promote health and fitness. We think it’s a great way to start the day as you get to be social with your friends and walk too!

We crossed safely at each intersection with a police car helping us cross the busiest road. Students wore stickers so they wouldn’t get lost and when we got to school we all got a bottle of water and plenty of fruit. We recommend that all students at Dominic take the opportunity to participate in events like this and try walking safely to school. You get more time with your friends and are being healthy too.
