Grandparents Day 2016

What a wonderful day we had for our Grandparents Day on Wednesday 14 Spetember! Our students were delighted and overwhelmed by having their Grandparents join them in the classrooms. In particular it was delightful to see Lucy in Year 1A; she was speechless when her Grandparents arrived from Launceston when she wasn’t expecting them to be able to attend.

Our morning started with morning tea in the Savio Centre for our Grandparents. It was an opportunity for them to catch up with old friends and make new ones whilst waiting for the students to come in.

Thank you to our Year 6 student leaders who helped out with finding seats and handing out drinks and extra snacks. Once everyone was seated and ready Ms Gilligan officially welcomed everyone with a poignant speech about the wonderful relationships Grandparents have with their grandchildren. A big thank you to Virginia Brown who offered to sign for our hearing impaired Grandparents.

Ms Gilligan gave insights into the important role our grandparents play in the lives of the students of Dominic College. How all of our students know their grandparents are there to love them, play with them, share stories of their youth, present and future and to guide them in their choices, from their hearts. Our students know their grandparents know them and love them for who they are. Many Grandparents commented on the speech and how it touched them in a number of ways.

Our students sang Right Here In My Heart(The Grandparents' Song) by Michael Mangan. This is a beautiful song which encompasses the many values and names our grandparents have.

Once everyone moved into the classrooms a range of diverse activities were completed by all. From flower making, to Bingo games, chocolate dipped fruit to personal interviews, and dress ups in the Kindergarten playground everyone agreed much fun was had by all!

We were delighted with the number of people who commented how special they felt the day was and that they really valued the opportunity to be in the classroom with their grandchildren and meet the friends whom they often hear about. Many thanks to those who drove from all over the State to be with us.

Of course our day didn’t just happen! We could not have had such a special occasion without our wonderful teacher, administration and maintenance teams who organised all aspects of the morning to ensure it ran smoothly and everyone was catered for. A big thank you to them all as it truly was a day where some special memories were made for all and we look forward to meeting with you all again next year.
