Playground vision

Play is a rich dimension of being human, human development and learning. Children and young people worldwide love to play and it is essential to their growth as positive, cooperative and collaborative people. Being with friends is often quoted by students as the thing they most enjoy in their lives. In the Salesian tradition, the school playground is the most central invitational space for making friends and is considered to be just as important as the classroom. It was the common ground for our founder Don Bosco in developing his relationship with the boys with whom he worked in nineteenth-century Turin.

Dominic debating

On the evening of Wednesday 31 March Dominic College hosted Round 2 of the Tasmanian Debating Union’s Southern Schools’ Competition. Students, teachers and parents from schools all over Hobart were present for 18 separate debates involving over 100 students. Dominic College’s involvement in this competition has grown this year, with five teams competing across all year levels. Wednesday night was a great excuse to show off our facilities, and an opportunity for staff to come along and observe our students in action.

Holy Week

This week, students across the College have taken the time to recall and mark the journey of Christ’s passion. Students have entered these liturgies and ceremonies with reverence and sincerity, demonstrating respect and understanding of the meaning of the Lenten Season for our faith community. Our Year 5 and 6 students are to be particularly commended for the outstanding way they prepared and offered the opportunity for our K-6 students to commemorate the Way of the Cross across the College grounds.

P&F Easter Raffle

The P&F Easter Raffle has received amazing support from all parents, students and the school community with nearly $3000 being raised in just 3 short weeks. From the donations we received, we managed to put together over 30 large hampers that were drawn on Wednesday afternoon. A huge thanks to Mary, Sharon and Katerina for helping put together the hampers and to Megan and Mary for helping me draw the raffle. Students enjoyed the excitement of the raffle expertly hosted by Mrs Doyle. Thank you again to all families for your donations and to the hard work involved in selling tickets.

Reflections from the Rector

As we approach Palm Sunday this week and Good Friday next week we can’t really evade the notion of suffering. It is real, it is evident, it has been a part of the human story for such a long time. Let us be perfectly clear about the suffering and death of Jesus. He was no masochist. He didn’t look for suffering but it nevertheless came his way. He did things differently. He aroused suspicion. He spoke of God as his Father. He healed on the Sabbath. He reinterpreted the Mosaic tradition. He upset religious authorities. He stood for the truth. He seemingly blasphemed. He aroused jealousy.
