Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day

The College first commenced marking Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day on 4 August 2021.

Children’s Day is a national day dedicated to celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children across Australia. It is a time when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities celebrate the strengths and culture of their children. The day also provides an opportunity for all Australians to show their support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that culture, family and community play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child.

Dominic College students from K-6 celebrated the 2021 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day theme ‘Proud in Culture, Strong in Spirit.’ Within their classrooms and during their playtime, our students participated in a variety of different culturally based activities:

• Hearing and learning palawa kani, the language of Tasmanian Aborigines
• Listening to and reading traditional stories
• Learning about native plants and bush tucker
• Cooking using bush tucker ingredients (wattle seeds).
• Dancing to music played by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians
• Mark making – creating symbols in the sand and artworks inspired by the theme
• Playing Indigenous based games
